In 2020, People’s Daily published a report criticizing so-called “sissy” male idols, reflecting how masculinity and femininity in China have long been framed in rigid, binary terms. Such narrow definitions can be both psychologically and physically harmful to teenagers. In recent years, however, concepts such as gender fluidity and gender fluctuation have entered public discourse, and the idea of being non-binary is gaining increasing visibility. More gender-diverse voices are being heard.
As a queer, I have also struggled with questions of gender identity. Much of our fear stems from ignorance. Through my work, I hope to use a playful and approachable visual language to engage Chinese teenagers and their parents, raising awareness and fostering greater understanding of gender diversity.
