OUT OF BORDER

Guizhou, a mountainous region in southwest China, has experienced rapid urbanization driven by railway development. Mountains, once natural barriers, are now connected by tunnels—symbols of both progress and disruption. While these tunnels link places, the external forces of modernization have also fractured local folklore, cultural heritage, and emotional bonds.

In my work, I use the tunnel as a metaphor to trace how the Miao language transformed—from its birth in symbolic forms to becoming alienated in meaning—revealing the complex and multifaceted impacts of Guizhou’s urbanization.
